State Qualifier Game Notes, July 6 & 7
The Friday game against New Prague was a short handed effort. Only six of our regular players were available and only one of the regular coaches. We did manage to find two sub to have the minimum of 8 players. Still the kids put on quite a show in a come from behind 11-10 win. Mary Kate pitched a complete game and made a nice catch on a pop up. Just when we thought "The Club" was complete, one of the subs, Gretchen, laced one past the outfielders. But the real heroics, and strangeness, came in the last inning. Trailing 10 - 9 heading into our last at bat, we tied the game and with two outs had Amy on third base. Molly hit a soft pop up down the first base line. The ball hit fair and the spin took it several feet into foul territory. The first baseman picked it up and threw to the base and the ump called Molly out on a foul ball! This was just one of many bad calls (lack of knowledge of the rules, enforcing rules that hadn't been called all year and shouldn't be at 10's, questionable decisions etc.). Coach Eric protested but the umpire has final say. The ump did, however, go see the umpire in chief to find out about how to play a tie breaker extra inning. While there he must have discussed the last play and came back and called it a foul ball. So Molly completes a walk and Callan walks as well to fill the bases for Addie. In a season notable for the many long hits that Addie has made, she hit her longest of the year for a walk off grand slam home run.

The first game on Saturday (again with 8 players but 2 coaches) was against a very talented Brooklyn Park team. It was the first game of the day and the field had been watered overnight and unfortunately there was a small puddle in front of our dugout. Small, but magnetic. Our first batter, Molly, walked and flipped her bat aside only to have it roll right into the puddle (which is very appropriate for someone nicknamed Piglet). Two other batters found the puddle in the first inning and so did the warm up ball from the infielders. We had some nice hits with Addie lining one over short, Callan hitting and RBI single to center and MK beating out an infield hit. As usual, Addie stroked a 3 RBI double to deep left center, but we could not hold their powerful offense at bay and we lost 20 - 10.

The second game Saturday was against St. Anthony. The game got off to a great start with MK pitching and the first play was a 5-3 putout from Kelly to Addie. We almost got through the first inning scoreless but the batter fouled off 3 two strike pitches before earning a bases loaded walk. The next hitter cleared the bases with a sharp hit to our vacant center field position and the game kind of snowballed - a bad analogy when the game time temperature was 96 - out of control. We did make some nice defensive plays with Annie to MK for a 4-3 and Gretchen to MK for a 9-3. Molly caught for the first time all season and did a great job with all the low pitches. She looked very menacing while she stared runners back to the base. Our lone run was a Callan special. She hit a double to left. The throw to second beat her, but she made a good slide under the tag. Addie followed with one of her monster hit, actually this one went about 2 feet, which she beat out for a hit. Callan kept running from second and scored, again with a good slide, on a close play.

Everyone Is In The Club!!

The Club is for anyone who hit one past an outfielder during a game. At one of our early practices we measured hitting and only one player, Lauren, hit the ball hard enough to get to, much less past, the outfielders. We announced a team goal of having everyone hit one past the outfileders and most of the players assumed that was an impossible challenge. They worked very hard in practice getting quicker and more powerful swings and one by one the hits past the outfileders started coming. Some players could have joined the club earlier than they did except for some great defensive plays. Others caught a break when an outfielder didn't come up with a routine catch. None the less at the last regular season game of the season, the club was completed. By the way, Coach Jim sets this as a goal for every team he coaches and this the the FIRST ONE to get it done (it has always been 8 or 9 players in the past). Way to go Silver Royals! Here's the list of hits that made the club complete.

May 14, Kelly, double down the left field line
May 19, Addie, Home Run to right center
May 21, Lauren, single to center
May 21, Samantha, double over the center fielder's head
June 2, Rosie, single to right (and later a triple to right)
June 2, Ellie, single down the right field line
June 16, Molly, (subbing for White), single to left
June 18, Callan, single past left fielder on the fly
June 24, Annie, single down left field line
June 25, Amy, single down left field line
July 2, Mary Kate, 2 RBI single to center.

Congratulations on throwing farther We measured throwing distance at an early and late practice. Of the six players who got measured both times, 5 increased their average distance by at least 15%!. Kelly was the leader with an increase of 76% followed by Callan at 29%. Special mentions would go to Addie and Annie who, had they been measured both time, would have had 30% or more increases.

Game Notes, July 2 vs. Edina
The team was in a bit of a lull coming off of the great games at Waconia and the Becker Blast and getting ready for the state qualifier. We lost both games but there ware some performances worth noting. Mary Kate completed the club of players, now at EVERYBODY, who has ht one past the outfielders. Mary's contribution was a 2 RBI single to center. Also in the first game we pulled of a very good 7-5 putout Ellie to Amy. Addie, Molly and Lauren combined on a 1-4-3 putout on a hard line drive. LAuren also contributed a 3 RBI double.

The first pitch of the second game was a called strike, notable because it was Callan's first pitch of the year! She finished the inning with a shoe full of sand and a good experience. Addie showed some hig softball IQ by swinging (and missing) at a very bad 3-0 pitch in the hope of getting one to hit on a 3-1 count. She did and lined a home run to right center. Lauren followed with our first back to back home run combo of the season (if you count a swinging bunt that rolled 10 feet, a hurried throw -because of Lauren's hustle- that got away and some daring base running to get all the way home). Yes, it does indeed count. MK also had a nice hit to left.

The cheering for both games was great and the DQ run after the game was the perfect way to get ready for the state tournament. Game notes from Waconia, June 25
Just when you think the kids can't top their accomplishment at Becker, there comes a SWEEP over a Waconia team that was 13 -1 - 2 in league play before meeting Hopkins Silver.

The first game was all about hitting with some timely defense, steady pitching and a bit of luck. We batted exactly the nine players in every inning. Addie and Lauren beat out infield hits with hustle and Annie beat out a hard hit liner that was knocked down by the pitcher. Kelly, Ellie & Mary Kate had a three person stretch of soft pop ups that fell just out of reach. Amy, again subbing, joined the club of players hitting it past the outfielders (now at ten) with a drive to left. Addie combined with Lauren on a nice 6-3 putout. We had a tough time with injuries in the third inning as Kelly had to miss an at bat after skinning her knee in the dugout, Elie had to leave the game after getting hit by a pitch and Addie had to stop pitching after getting hit in the face (with a throw from the catcher). We came into the bottom of the third and last with a 9-6 lead due to MK's solid starting pitching. Addie was brought in for the save but lasted only one batter giving way to Ellie. They pushed across two to make it 9-8 with one out and runners on 2nd & 3rd. The count was 3-0 to the last of the powerful hitters in their lineup and their coach gave the "swing at anything" sign in hopes of getting a good pitch for her to hit to drive in the winning runs. The 3-0 pitch was way off the plate, but was a swinging strike. Next came a called strike then she swung through strike 3. The next batter walked to load the bases and Ellie quickly got the count to 0-2 before going to 3-2. The batter stroked the next pitch sharply up the middle and Rosie came in from center field, grabbed the ball and scampered to second to get a force out and preserve the victory.

The second game started with another hitting exhibition. Addie had an RBI liner to 3rd and Callan hustled to beat the force play at second. With 3 runs in, bases loaded and a 3-2 count with two outs, MK was running with the pitch from second. She was able to just barely score on Amy's hit to complete a five run inning against their second best pitcher (their ace had the night off except for part of the last inning in the first game to keep them within 5). Lauren came in and was dominant from the first pitch and gave up no hits in the first inning though they did score an unearned run. We didn't score in our final 3 at bats and it was up to Lauren and the defense to win the game. In the second MK caught a pop up and Lauren got 2 strike outs for a 3 up 3 down inning. In the third MK to Addie on a 4-3 putout and Rosie, playing catcher, caught a foul bunt for an out as Lauren kept her no hitter through 3. Even though we could quite mount a rally the at bats looked really good off a very fast pitcher who had settled down. MK fould off 4 2 strike pitches and worked a walk, then stole second against their very strong armed catcher. Lots of players hit sharp foul balls.

In the bottom of the 4th they started catching up with Lauren's heat. Sandwiched around a couple of strike outs were enough hits to make the score 5-4 with runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs. Lauren responded by striking out the last batter to complete the sweep. As we walked off the field the Waconia coach said "We'll see you in the state tournament!" Our players formed the "tunnel" into their dugout which was a ritual Waconia did not have to do before.

Game notes from Becker Tournament
We Earned Hardware!!

The trophies only say a little about the great weekend of softball and fun. On Saturday we finished tied for 2nd in out pool and could have easily won the pool had we not been shorthanded. Hitting clicked all day, pitching and defense was mostly solid.

The first game against Elk River was at 8 A. M. after a long drive from the cities that had most kids (and parents) getting up at 5:30 or so. There were a few highlights in the 7 - 5 loss. Lauren hit one past the center fielder for an RBI hit, Annie and Addie each hustled to beat out infield hits. Rosie hit one that the second baseman made a great running catch and Lauren made a nice unassisted putout at 1st. But the debut of Mary Kate as a pitcher was th game's highlight. The first batter went out 4-3 (Addie to Callan), then came a strikeout, a walk and another strikeout. A shutout, no hit inning to start a pitching career and give us a chance to catch up.

The second game was a 9-8 win over Wayzata White. Callan hit one to left and Rosie slid into third to beat the throw. Annie, trying to join the club of players who have hit one past the outfielders this season hit a liner over the short stop's head, but the left fielder didn't let it get by her. Callan did hit a liner past the left fielder & Rosie had a 2 RBI hit. Addie continued her fearless base running and made it to second when the catcher tried to pick her off first after a big lead. She scored on MK's hit. Ellie hit a liner that bounced off the pitcher all the way back to the catcher. Ellie reached base safely and the pitcher was OK after a few minutes. The team lunch at a restaurant was a great, fun time.

The third game against Becker Gold resembled fastpitch. After 2 1/2 innings we held a 1 - 0 lead, but we had hit into two double plays and two fly ball outs to outfielders (Rosie was robbed on an outstanding backhanded running catch). The one run we had was all Addie hustle, beating out an infield hit, stealing second (no passed ball) then scoring from second on an infield hit by Lauren. They broke on top with a two run double to center field because with only 8 players we had no center fielder. Lauren's early pitching was simply spectacular (the opposing coach commented that they had seem anyone like her all year) We ended up losing 10 - 3 and that turned out to be a good thing because we lost a tie breaker and made it to the Silver division on Sunday instead of being over matched in the Gold division (Wayzata White made it to Gold and lost both their Sunday games).

The mission Sunday was to win the first two games to insure that we get at least a second place trophy. We again had to play at 8, but the early start didn't bother the hitters. Rosie stroked one past the right fielder to lead off the game and there was no looking back. Addie knocked one past the outfielders and Kelly had a 2 RBI hit both in the first inning. We scored 5 in each of the three innings and there were very few walks. Amy (thanks for subbing) had an RBI single and scored on Rosie's RBI hit. They combined for the same results in the next inning, Amy with an RBI hit and scoring on Rosie's RBI hit. Addie had 2 RBI's with a double to left. Addie pitched the first two innings very well and left with a 10-3 lead. The defense made some nice plays. While pitching, Addie caught a pop up and also picked up a grounder down the first base line and tagged out the batter. Sam tried tagging out a batter coming to first and chased her way out of the baseline for an automatic out. There were a couple of other automatic outs. We benefitted from an infield fly rule call that nobody actually caught, and Sam tripped and fell off second base and was called out for leaving early. Ellie, on her 10th birthday, pitched a scoreless inning.

Game 2 Sunday was against yet another team from Becker and the result was much the same. We got the win we needed to ensure hardware. Ellie got a birthday present of being hit by a pitch (and getting an RBI). Kelly collided with the first baseman who had missed a throw and leaned into the baseline. The first baseman left the game but returned the next inning while Kelly (who was very sorry) went on to score a run. Annie again just missed getting one past the outfielders when she ripped a liner down the left field line way past the left fielder, but inches foul. MK pitched two good innings, giving up two runs each and leaving with a 10-4 lead and picked up her first career win. She was helped with great defense in the second with a 1-3 putout to Callan, a 9-3 putout from Addie to Callan and Amy getting the third out by picking up a short grounder and racing to third to barely beat the runner for a force out. Annie made yet another bid to get it past the outfielders and this time joined the club (now at nine members) with a nearly identical hit down the line, this one inches fair. Ellie, just minutes before the actual time of leaving a single digit age got credit for an unassisted double play. She was pitching and with the bases loaded there was a pop up near her. The infield fly rule was called but the ball dropped. The runner on third started running home, Ellie picked up the ball and tagged her out.

The schedule had a long break between games, and even with a 45 minute commute, the players made it back for a pool party and some birthday cake. Getting back to softball on a hot day was a little difficult, especially against a very tough Prior Lake team. Ellie continued her birthday teats by winning the ball roll so we could be the home team. The defense had some nice plays with Kelly catching a pop up, Rosie to MK to Callan (9-4-2) to throw a runner out at the plate from deep right field, Samantha to Lauren for a 9-3 putout and Ellie to Callan twice in one inning for 4-3 outs. Callan to Sam was a very nice 6-3 putout. The hitting continued to be good with Addie hitting and RBI triple and Samantha and Annie getting RBI hits. Ellie continued her great birthday by hitting one over the right fielder's head on the fly for a triple. Although we came up short in the final score we had out best tournament of the season, with trophies to prove it. Go Royals!

Game notes vs. Chaska, June 18
Wow, everybody had their hitting shoes on. Even five of our outs were to the outfield. Without the good plays Chaska made we would still be hitting (except for that 5 run rule). And a couple of more players were added to the "Hit One Past The Outfielders" club.

The second inning of the first game was the most consistent hitting all year - 7 hard hit balls. Callan put on past the left fielder on the fly (welcome to the club!), Ellie knocked a double past the right fielder . Samantha hit a double and Lauren had an RBI single. In addition to good hitting, Lauren threw her hardest of the year. Addie made a quick thinking play at first to tag the batter. Unfortunately we lost the game 8-6.

The second game was one of those 5 run limit fests except for the one inning we went three up three down (2 outfield outs, however) which led to a 15 - 10 loss. The hitting and good play continued. Ellie got 3 RBI's on a double down the right field line. Rose hit one past the center fielder. Mary Kate had a 2 RBI single to left. Molly had an RBI hit. Addie had agressive base running made it all the way to third on an overthrow at first. Molly had some great slides on her stolen bases. Rosie, as a left fielder, caught a fly ball on the grass and in the next inning hit one to the same spot that their left fielder caught. Kelly tried out her new bat but she walked every time (except when she got hit by a pitch).

Over the weekend Piglet subbed for the White team and became the 7th player to hit one past the outfielders with a bases loaded, 2 RBI single to left. Callan became the 8th player vs. Chaska.

Game notes vs. Minnetonka, June 11
Two eyewitness accounts, one from a player one from a parent. Either we had pretty good pitching though Mtka hit the ball well, or it was shakey. Our hitting was good or not quite. Both agree that we lost both games.

Game notes vs. Edina White, June 4
Our first double header sweep of the season! Two very well played 3 inning games. The first featured a complete game no hit shut out by Lauren with 8 strikeouts. The only fair ball was a grounder back to Lauren who threw to Callan for the out. Lauren also hit a bases loaded double past the left fielder for three runs on the way to a 9 - 0 win. Callan made a bid to become the 7th player to hit one past the outfielders this season with two solid singles to left (one on the fly to the grass) but not quite past the outfielder. The second game was a nail biter. Molly had out first bunt single of the season for her first hit of the year, and later followed with a swinging hit. Addie pitched a scoreless first with 3 K's. The second featured some good defensive plays with Lauren (CF) making an unassisted force out at second and Addie picking up a grounder and racing home to tag a runner out. After 2 we were down 2-1 due to some great defense by Edina. Samantha ripped a bases loaded liner to the pitcher and Annie was cut down at third trying to advance an extra base. In the third the bats came alive for four runs. Kelly had a nice line drive hit to center and Addie got a double on good agressive running on a hit past the center fielder (and took third when the throw got away a litte bit). Everyone was agressive in stealing bases. Samantha pitched the bottom of the third and struck out the last batter of the game with the bases loaded and the tying run on third for a 5-4 win.

Tournament notes from Royal Rampage, June 2 & 3.
We finished in a tie for second in our pool, our best pool play performance of the season. One of the losses was against Orono, a team that had not lost yet all season to any of the A teams they have played (or anybody, for that matter).

Game 1 Molly started the day right with a ball roll to get us the home field advantage against Minnetonka. After starting in a 5 - 0 hole after one inning, the play was outstanding in a dramatic come from behind last inning win. Hitting was great and Rosie became the 5th player to hit one past the outfielders with an RBI single to right, and for good measure did it again with a bases loaded triple. Addie also knocked one past the center fielder. Ellie hit her hardest ball of the season. Callan beat out an infield hit representing the tying run in the bottom of the 4th (last) inning. She later scored the tying run on a fly by Samantha, a very rare event in 10U. Kelly had the game winning RBI as Addie scored on a hit to third. Lauren pitched a complete game win and made a nice fielding play throwing to MK for an out.

Game 2Annie followed Molly's success at rolling the ball with a perfect throw that ended up snuggled against the pitcher's plate. Against the tough Orono squad (they were all tall enough to even let the coaches run through the tunnel they made for us after the game) that was the highlight, except for one great defensive inning in which Addie allowed zero runs. In that inning Mary Kate, playing second, went back and to her left to snare a line drive. MK also caught a pop up to end the inning. And, as so often happens, the played making the great play to end the inning bats first the next inning. Why that happens, no one knows.

Game 3Ellie joined the list of players (now at 6) to get one past the outfielders on a drive over first base and past the right fielder. Lauren cleared the loaded bases with a hit past the center fielder and Rose continued her hot hitting with a liner over the short stop's head. But the hitting hero of the game was Annie with two hits and very aggressive leading off at second base. The defense also made some nice plays with Addie making a leaping catch at short on a line drive and Mollie throwing to Addie for a good 4-3 putout.

Game 4, Sunday Another A team, and that means very few highlights. The defensive practice for bunts made us look like a softball team. With Rose at first, Callan at 3rd and MK at second, everyone was running into the right positions a batter squared to bunt. The swings the players were taking looked very good for the most part, crisp and powerful. Lauren hit one past the outfielders, but that was pretty much it as we were eliminated from the tournament.

Game notes from May 29 split vs. Minnetonka Titans.
Lots of good things and some that need work. On the plus side the defense played very well. Rosie threw out a batter from shortstop that kept a run from scoring. Ellie and Lauren combined on a 1-2 putout to save a run. MK to Ellie and Rose to Callan were good plays on second to first putouts. On the bases the running was very good. Piglet slid into second on a steal and she was safe on a close play because she didn't have to slow down before getting to the base. Callan, Rosie and Molly continue to get great lead offs. Addie put the pressure on the defense by taking third then home after her double on balls that rolled away (but not very far) from the defenders. On the hitting side, Annie got her first hit of the season and she ran hard through first to make it on a close play. Ellie had an RBI single and Addie hit two balls past the outfielders, a double to left center and a triple to right. Even some of the outs were well hit with Callan lining out to the pitcher and Rosie htting a fly to deep short. Lauren pitched a complete game 7 - 3 victory. Molly threw harder than ever and Ellie and Addie pitched solidly. Needing some work was lookig at too many hittable pitches go by for called strikes. Overall it's looking more and more like fastpitch softball. Keep it up!!

Game Notes from May 21 vs. Hopkins White
Too many good things to mention them all but here's a few highlights. The team cheers were the best of the season. Tournament experience from last weeked really helped. We split the two games with a very impressive 8 - 2 win in the second game behind Lauren's pitching and lot of great plays. The night was very windy and we started and ended game 1 with 8 players with one coming late and one leaving early, one who was ill and one sub. Addie hit the farthest ball of the season, foul down the right field line. She also caught a pop up while pitching. Molly to Callan was a good 4-3 putout and Kelly to Samantha was an even better 9-3 putout, throwing out a batter from right field. Lauren became the third player this season to hit one past the outfielders (one team goal for the season is that most players do that) on a sharp single to (& through) center. In the second game gave up no earned runs and very few walks. Callan and Molly did a great job of leading off when they were on 2nd and first, each getting almost half way to the next base. Gabby (thanks again for subbing) scored from first base on a double by Samantha because she was running with the pitch and got a great jump. The double, by the way, let Samantha become the 4th player to hit it past the outfielders as the center fielder went back on the fly ball but couldn't make the catch. Addie beat out an infield grounder and when the throw got away at first she scrambled to second. The throw there also got away, but just by a few feet and she made it to third on a close play, and , you guessed it, the throw got away and she scored on another close play. Great agressive running. Molly had the game ending RBI, the one that put us 6 ahead with no chance for them to catch up. Thanks to Emma for subbing from the White team (she was the only player to win both games!). White and Silver did a joint cheer at the end of the game.

Tournament Notes from Edina Mayfly, May 19 & 20
The first game of pool play we faced a very, very tough team in OMGAA Crimson. We played our best game of the tournament, and probably of the season, with lots of great things going on. Twice we got two outs on them before they scored and we put the ball in play often. Addie pitched for the first time and recorded a strike out and ground out for her first two batters (and later gave up a home run, but more on that later). Samantha also pitched for the first time and retired her first batter 6-3 with Piglet making a nice play at short. Samantha ripped an RBI single to score our first run> Addie make up for allowing a home run by hitting one of her own. She hit a line drive between center and left. Their defense played the ball as well as they could and Addie beat the throw home for our first home run of the season. Rosie had two stolen bases on pitches that were not passed balls and Annie took her most agressive swings of the season. OMGAA won their three pool games by a combined score of 42 - 5, and we scored 3 of those 5 runs!

In the second game Lauren pitched well and caught a pop up with the bases loaded to end one inning. Elie made a nice play covering first while she was the second baseman. Addie was very aggressive on the base paths so that she was in a position to score on a single by Lauren. Edina Green was the winner of the second game. Our only injury of the day happened in that game as Addie was leaving the dugout after the game and she hit her head on the water jug and got a small cut.

The third game was another very tough team from Bloomington. Addie pitched another great inning and recorded two assists and a strike out (Samantha made a very nice pickup of one of Addie's low throws for the out). Lauren did a good job of backing up plays. Wew had our first runner thrown out stealing. She slowed down to look at the catcher getting ready to make the throw and was out by half a step. (Maybe the fancy newly designed helmet had just enough wind resistence to slow her down?) Thanks to coach John for the great artistic work on some of the helmets.

Sunday's game against Edina White promised to be a closer game and it lived up to the advance billing. Unfortunately we had a slow start and were trailing 5 - 0 after one inning making it difficult to catch up in a three inning game with a five run per inning limit. After the second we were only down 6 - 5 (and had left hte bases full in each inning). Lauren had an imaginary bulls eye on the batters and hit quite a few including one in the helmet (they were all OK). Needing to hold Edina to four runs in the third to give us a chance, Addie came through and got a strike out with the bases loaded to end the top of the third with a 10 - 5 deficit. After our first two batters were out we strung together 6 hits and walks to have the tying runner on second. Several of the six had two strikes before reaching base. Alas, the game ended with the tying runner stranded at second. We will see that team again during league play.

Game Notes from Monday, May 14
Lots of great plays and hitting and pitching. It adds up the to first win of the season, 4-3 vs.Minnetonka. Samantha had the game winning RBI hit. Lauren pitched a complete game with six strikeouts (3 innings) and three defensive outs recorded. The second game (10 - 10 tie) featured outstanding hitting. One of our team goals for the season is to have every hitter hit one past the outfielders. Kelly became the first to do that with a line drive down the left field line for a double, our first extra base hit of the season. Callan followed with a rocket to short that she couldn't handle. Hitting is contagious as two batters later Samantha drove in a couple more runs with a hit.

Game Notes from Thursday, May 10
Great work! The defense made just about every play, batters were hitting well and each of the three pitchers recorded strike outs and did better in her second inning compared to the first. A few things worth noting. Lauren to Mary Kate was our first defensive out of the season that was not a strikeout. Molly to Samantha (with Callan backing up the play) was the first out not involving the pitcher and Allie to Samantha was the first out from the left side of the infield. Mary Kate had the season's first hit, a line drive between short and third. A couple of well hit balls were pulled inches foul down third. Gabby and Rose reached bases on back to back getting hit by pitches. Molly was successful on the first straight steal (no passed ball). Lots of positive things to build on. Thanks to our substitute players for the day, Gabby and Allie.

Game Notes from Monday, May 7
Rain, Rain go away - at least beyond Thursday!
Monday's season opener was washed out due to a sudden downpour and the resulting unplayable field. The game has been rescheduled for Thursday, May 10, same time same place - actually earlier for all those who showed up late on Monday. Call Eric if you will not be playing catch in the outfield by 5:45. The team warm-up starts promptly at 5:45.
